On Monday, April 18th, MTFR crews were invited to tour the Lancaster facility of Alcoa North American Rolled Products. This plant deals with the production of common alloy products, specializing in aluminum sheet and cast plate. The plant, located in Manheim Township near Routes 72 and 283, measures over 1 million square feet. The operations in the plant are complex and navigating the buildings can be confusing for those that are unfamiliar with the layout. The Lancaster facility is protected by an internal emergency response team that is trained and equipped to handle medical emergencies, chemical spills, rescues and fires. The on duty emergency response team members along with plant safety and health personnel provided the MTFR crews with a tour of the plant and explanation of emergency response procedures and hazards. Crews were split into 2 groups for an afternoon and evening tour. The information provided about the locations of the different process lines and hazards was very valuable for first responders that are called to assist the plant personnel. Thank you Alcoa Lancaster for your time and hospitality.
Watch for MTFR crews to visit other facilities in Manheim Township. Crews will be visiting facilities to become familiar with their layouts and hazards before an emergency occurs.
