This week, Harrisburg Area Community College instructors provided refresher training for MTFR Hazardous Materials Technicians. MTFR assists the Lancaster County Hazardous Materials Team by providing additional technicians on Hazardous Materials calls. Currently, 24 MTFR members are certified as HazMat Technicians. As a requirement for maintaining this certification, members must take 8 hours of refresher training annually. Hazardous Materials Technicians are those persons who respond to releases or potential releases of hazardous materials for the purpose of controlling the release. Their work is more aggressive than first responders in that they will approach the point of release to plug, patch, or otherwise stop the release of a hazardous materials substance. They are expected to use specialized chemical protective clothing and specialized control equipment. The initial training course to certify a HazMat Technician is 40 hours and involves classroom sessions, practical drills and testing.
